As part of the new Core Curriculum packages, Timberdoodle has introduced a Toddler Core Curriculum Package. In case you are surprised or aggravated by this news, let me assure you that Timberdoodle is not advocating hard core education of little ones. What they are providing is a wonderful collection of toys, games and educational material that is all activity based and designed to encourage parents to interact with their little ones in positive, beneficial ways. The part of the Toddler Core I am privileged to review is the Usborne book titled Educating and Entertaining Babies and Toddlers.

The entire Core comes with a folder full of supplemental material to help you use the products included and I will be commenting on that as well. Besides the book by Usborne, I also own the Lauri puzzles included in this core, and they were well worth the money spent. I will probably be ordering many of the other elements as time and money allow. One of my favorite things to do with Timberdoodle is give my parents and Dan’s parents birthday and Christmas gift options with links to the website.

As I looked through this book and considered which activities I could utilize right now in my home I was struck by the number of activities that we already enjoy or have enjoyed in the past. The authors obviously know babies and toddlers and have done a good job assembling ideas! I think this book will be perfect for the older siblings in our family to find ideas when it is their job to “entertain” the twins. In fact, I kinda wish I had the book in my possession a few weeks ago when I was trying to get some painting done and my tweens needed to keep the boys happy.

Since my twin boys just turned two, I skipped ahead to the section for two year olds and determined right away that they will enjoy the cooking with toddlers section.

Don’t worry, it’s all completely safe and is all about letting your toddlers play with harmless ingredients in a bowl while you cook or use safe utensils in fun ways. My sister has been doing this with her five year old for years and is creating precious memories all week long. I always intend to make this happen but too often get sidetracked by the very real task of feeding my family. It only takes a minute to fill a bowl with cheap dry pasta, hand your child a spoon, and set them to stirring far away from the hot stove. Clearly, they love it too! We have a knife designed for just for little hands (also from Timberdoodle), so I decided to follow the books advice and let my little boys try cutting bananas at breakfast this morning. They had a great time!

We already have a large and growing selection of plastic animals which all of my children love and this fit perfectly with another suggestion for the 2 year old in your family. In fact, the animal section has a number of terrific suggestions my boys enjoyed. I took four or five plastic animals with me to my daughter’s dance recital this evening and they worked like a charm when a distraction became necessary.

Entertaining and Education Babies and Toddlers is organized by age and each of the activities is super easy to implement. Most of the activities can be done with simple items you already own. The illustrations are extremely clear and the book is easy to use.

My Bottom Line: If you have a baby or toddler in your home you will not regret having this book on your shelf. The new mom will get lots of wonderful ideas from birth through age two, the veteran mom will be inspired to spend a bit of focused time on her youngest children, and the babysitting teen or mother’s helper will find a wealth of ways to keep that little one cooing and happily engaged.

As a company Timberdoodle has a wonderful reputation in our household and in the entire homeschool community for their high standards for product selection. They only choose the best of the best and they do a stand-up job of choosing the best. I am proud to be a part of the Timberdoodle Blogger Review team. If you haven’t ever checked out the company before, they have a great facebook page.
