Inchimals by Fat Brain Toys

Have you seen Inchimals? As I was shopping at Timberdoodle, I found these adorable math manipulatives. I immediately put them in my cart. Just as they were sitting there waiting for my husband’s next paycheck, I was asked as a member of Timberdoodle’s Blogging Review Team to review this item. I was more than thrilled, I think I actually let out a joyful noise. You see as a homeschooling parent I am always trying to find the best but I’m on a budget. My budget does not allow for me to make mistakes in judgment. I thought Inchimals would be a risky move since at the time I had not heard of them and if math manipulatives were candy, I own enough to supply Willy Wonka for a year.

In the interest of homeschooling budgets everywhere I put this product to the test. It was easy to do since once my Kindergartner saw me open the box I had no choice but to dive right in and let the learning begin.

I love teaching beginning math with my kids. Inchimals made lessons enjoyable and memorable. Let’s start with the basics.

What are Inchimals?

Inchimals are 12 wooden blocks, each with a different animal and number painted on the block. The blocks are made into one inch increments. The ladybug is one inch and so on until you arrive at the 12 inch giraffe. Included in the set are a dry erase marker and a spiral bound dry erasable book with puzzles.

Who can use Inchimals?

The recommended age is 3 and up. This product is great addition to your homeschool supplies, preschool activities, day care or preschool teaching tool, or on the go learning. The activity puzzles explore addition, subtraction and mixed equations so children of any age learning those math skills or in need of review will love Inchimals.

How can you use Inchimals?

The puzzle book begins with simple addition. The child is asked to determine the sum of one mouse and one bear. The child then finds the animal which is equal in length to the mouse and bear put together. The child will see that one mouse and one bear is equal to one ostrich. Then the child is instructed to write the number associated with each animal. Basically the child just determined the sum of 3 and 7.

As the book continues with puzzles on subtraction, 3 digit addition, equivalent sums, addition and subtraction, and finding multiple sums of a given number.

Since the book is dry erase this gives the child the ability to go over the puzzles multiple times and to be passed down to a younger sibling.

Another thing this Charlotte Mason minded homeschool mom liked was how the blocks gave you the answer. Meaning, the child is not writing down the wrong answer but the correct answer is always being reinforced. The equations are also consistently reinforced in the correct manner. This provides a young child with the proper habits of learning math. Basically, your child is not memorizing mistakes that will take you and your child extra work to breakdown. Yet that the same time your child is not being spoon fed the answers but using critical thinking skills to determine answers.

What else can a child learn from Inchimals?

The obvious lesson besides beginning math is measuring. A child can easily determine how many giraffes tall her sibling is or how many frogs tall their favorite toy is and so much more. However, the lessons do not end with addition, subtraction, counting and measuring. While, I could not see any other use for these adorable animals, Timberdoodle also suggested using them to sequence tallest to shortest or shortest to tallest as well as using them as puppets for dramatic play or stacking them like you would any blocks. The funny thing about those suggestions is that my children were already doing all of those things while using Inchimals that day without me presenting the ideas. So kudos to Inchimals for helping a child use her imagination to learn lessons creatively.

Would I recommend this to a friend?

Not only would I recommend this to a friend I would buy it as a gift. It is a rare thing to combine creative learning in a way that is fun yet not spoon feeding or entertaining your child. I do not like educational supplies or toys which do the thinking for the child or entertain them into learning. I believe both develops bad habits and issues. Inchimals is cute, fun, and educationally sound. This item provokes imagination and learning and does not insert it in the child’s head.

Disclosure: I am a member of the Timberdoodle Blogger Review Team and as such this product was provided for me to review. My review is based on actual use and my own thoughts. Timberdoodle may or may not agree with my assessment or my use of the item.
